Other people, like me, are just passionate about make-up and making others feel beautiful, but are untrained. Don't get me wrong, a lot of employees are actually licensed cosmotologists, or are currently enrolled in beauty school. If you look at my post history, you'll see that I posed a long ass rant about how Ulta doesn't train their beauty advisors adequately enough. I was asked to color match on my third (or so) day working, and had no idea wtf I was doing. I just can't believe that four different employees would be so far off. She matched me to 1W1 in Double Wear, which is actually a spot on, perfect match. I showed the associate all the shades I tried and she got wide-eyed and said they were all way too dark and too cool. She swears it's a perfect match, I go home, this time it's my kid who asks about the shitty spray tan.įinally tonight I caved and went to Sephora. She picks out 220, I point out that it's another cool shade, which is what I'm trying to avoid. I tell her the shade is ok, tone is way off, what can I try that's either more neutral or warm. She says either 210 would better match me. I go back, different girl again, give her the DL. I get home and my husband again points out that I look like I have a shitty spray tan. She knocks me down to 330, again, swearing that it was spot on. She swore it was right, I got home and my husband was like "did you get a spray tan? It looks like shit".Īt a later date I go and get matched to Teint Idole by a different employee. A while ago I went into Ulta to pick up Naked Skin, the employee matches me to 4.0. My standard has always been fair in winter, fair-light in summer. I have never in my life been beyond the "light" range. I'm a blonde haired, green eyed, pale girl from Wisconsin. But lawd, guys.I can't get a good shade match from there if my life depended on it. Their employees are, mostly, nicer than Sephora's. Below, everything I purchased during my first visit to the instantly iconic NYC Ulta.I love Ulta, their rewards system is far superior compared to Sephora. The new location is, as expected, vast and overwhelming - but seeing as I walked through every aisle at least seven times and pestered every sales clerk for information, also at least seven times, I’m fairly confident that I didn’t miss anything. But, because I have Ulta rules I’m intent on keeping, I wouldn’t let myself visit until I was nearly out of products. So you can imagine how ecstatic I was when they opened their first Manhattan location in November on the Upper East Side. Since I’ve been doing this for, well, years, I consider myself a seasoned expert at navigating the Ulta world in person and online.įor years, my Ulta obsession forced me to trek from the city out to Marine Park - i.e., very deep into Brooklyn - if I wanted my fix. When I go in, I like to swatch new foundations, concealers, and shadows, and ask the Ulta salespeople every annoying question I might have. But the Ulta beauty empire is home to some of the best products available - some of which are exclusives, like my beloved Tarte Shape Tape and It Cosmetic brushes.Īs a rule, I tend to reserve my visits to Ulta for when I am reaching the last drop of all the products in my cabinet and am in dire need of a big, dupe-and-splurge beauty haul. The downside of having such a massive selection (I swear, I’m not sponsored by Ulta - not that I’d say no if they asked), is that it can be tough to sort through what’s worth purchasing. Generally, when I walk in, I black out from overstimulation and only come to on my way home. Don’t get me wrong, I love Sephora (the Soho staff know my name and are familiar with my passion for Tatcha and Giorgio Armani foundation), but there’s something about the high-low nature of the Ulta experience - the ability to buy both NARS and Revlon, Bumble and Dove, all in the same place - that really gets me going. I am psychotically obsessed with Ulta, the beauty chain megastore that carries skin care, cosmetics, fragrances, and hair products.
